Meet Our Graduate Students
Meet Sam Livermore
My name is Sam (she/her) and I am a PhD researcher studying soft matter physics in Heinrich Jaeger’s lab. I’m originally from the north shore of Massachusetts, and I didn’t travel far for undergrad at Tufts where I majored in physics. Outside of the lab I am an artist, a musician, an avid reader of fantasy, and a boxer!
Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by scientists like Manu Prakash who strive not only to understand fundamental truths about the world but also to harness that knowledge to create affordable, accessible tech that benefits humanity (Prakash lab site).
What are you fans of?
I am a steadfast fan of the ocean and maintain that it will always be better than a big lake.
Why did you choose UChicago?
I chose the UChicago physics PhD program due to the strength of the experimental soft matter community here. There were several professors I would have been happy to work with, and I liked having many different possible avenues to explore even within one subfield.
If you could share any advice to your colleagues, what would it be?
If I could share any advice to my colleagues, it would be that there is a whole world sitting just outside of the lab. I know so many incredible physicists who live and breathe their research, and rarely find time for other things. So my advice is this: you don’t have to be an obsessed savant to be a good scientist! Go outside and appreciate the golden ginkgo trees on Ellis Ave.
